What is Balayam Yoga?

Balayam yoga is known as Nail Rubbing Exercise or Nail Exercise for hair growth or Nail Exercise to treat Hair Fall. But in the ancient Indian practice of Yoga rubbing nails is cited as “Balayam”. The composite word Balayam is derived from the combination of two Hindi words “Bal” and “Vyayam”. Here ‘Bal’ Means “Hair” and ‘Vyayam’ is referred to as “Exercise”.

So essentially Balayam is an Exercise for the Hair.

Basically in it is referred as Fingernail Rubbing Exercise.

Balayam is one of the simple and natural yoga techniques for hair regrowth mentioned in ancient books and works of yoga & Ayurveda by ancient Indians.

It is not like other Yoga asanas in which we have to perform Body movements.

Fingernail Rubbing is an alternative reflexology therapy for hair growth which involves rubbing identical fingernails together with some amount of force.

Balayam has also great importance in acupressure therapy.

A number of Ayurveda practitioners, Acupressure doctors, and Yoga masters recommend Balayam as the most common treatment for hair problems including hair fall, premature greying, alopecia areata, baldness, and even nourishes the Brain and treats insomnia!

How does it Work?

Only we have to do is that we have to rub our nails with some force.

Rubbing nails also increase blood circulation to your scalp, which strengthens your hair follicles and in turn, prevents hair fall or greying.

Science Behind Fingernail Rubbing for Hair Growth

1. The Yogic and Ayurvedic Theory Behind Nail Rubbing:

Balayam Yoga is originated from India in the form of yoga.

The Indian Medical Science-Ayurveda perfectly elucidates how Balayam Yoga or Prasanna Mudra works.

In Ayurveda, hair and nails are considered as malas (Waste products) of the metabolic processes that go into the formation of the Asti Dhatu (bones/skeletal system).

Thus the effect of the three doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) on asthi dhatu also reflects on hair and nails.

The excessive influence of any one dosha, but particularly Vata and Pitta, could lead to the distress signals of dandruff, premature graying, hair loss, or hair thinning.

Balayam and other yoga asanas help to balance these doshas, strengthens asthi dhatu, and rejuvenate the hair and thus promotes hair growth.

2. Rubbing Fingernails in Acupressure and Reflexology:

Reflexology is an alternative medicine involving the application of pressure on specific points or commonly referred to as ‘reflex areas’ on the feet and hands with specific thumb, finger, and hand techniques to heal distress in body parts or to provide relief in certain glands.

Reflexology works with the central nervous system.

This theory builds on the study done in the 1890s by two neurologists Sir Henry Head and Sir Charles Sherrington.

Who began to show through their research that a neurological relationship exists between the points on the skin and the internal organs and that the whole nervous system adjusts to a stimulus.

According to the theory, the reflexologist’s application of pressure to points on hands, feet, or ears transmits a calming message from the peripheral nerves, which in turn signals the body to adjust the tension level.

This enhances overall relaxation, brings internal organs and their systems into a state of optimum functioning, and increases blood supply (which brings additional oxygen and nutrients to cells and enhances waste removal).

Thus as per Reflexology points or chart, the Nerves ending present in the Nail bed and Nail Matrix is directly connected to the hair follicles present in the scalp.

Hence Performing Balayam Yoga for hair growth will stimulate the blood circulation in the scalp, especially in the hair follicles.

Improved blood supply results in hair nourishment and growth.

3. Rubbing Nails Based on Adult Stem Cell Theory:

Stem cells have the remarkable unique potential to develop into many different specialized cell types in the body.

When we take a look at Hair Anatomy there we can see that hair follicles also have adult stem cells which help in hair growth.

While Performing Nail Rubbing Exercise a neurological message is transmitted to the Stem cells present in the hair follicles.

Rubbing nails signals the stem cells, which results in damage repair in the hair follicle.

Because of the ability of the stem cell to renew itself, it produces new hair follicles at the damaged part of the scalp.

How Does Rubbing Nails Helps in Hair Growth?

We all are aware of a universal fact that the more blood supply a certain part of the body receives, the healthier it will be.

The enhanced blood flow to the scalp will make it healthier.

A healthy scalp can effectively nourish the hair follicles, thereby strengthening the hair, preventing hair loss, and boosting the hair quality and also promotes hair growth.

Thus, Balayam benefits include the growth of hair along with improvement in hair quality.
